His smile<br \/>\nis simply the place in his face<br \/>\nwhere the bone shows through.<br \/>\nBy a programming fluke<br \/>\nthe whole nation is watching.<br \/>\nThe boom-mike dips<br \/>\ninto the fidgety audience,<br \/>\nand, just this once<br \/>\nthe woman in the third row<br \/>\ndoes not try to say everything;<br \/>\ndoes not panic, or glance<br \/>\nat the notes in her lap.<br \/>\nIt just so happens<br \/>\nthat small corners<br \/>\nof the vast fields of knowledge,<br \/>\nrhetoric and experience<br \/>\noverlap with such precision,<br \/>\nsuch economy,<br \/>\nin this one person, that it occurs to her,<br \/>\noff the top of her head,<br \/>\nto speak a sequence of sentences<br \/>\nwhich not only render<br \/>\nthe Minister&#8217;s immediate remarks<br \/>\nlaughable and shabby,<br \/>\nbut expose the first principles<br \/>\nof his reason, proving<br \/>\nas a necessary truth<br \/>\nthe structural conspiracy<br \/>\nof maintained advantage<br \/>\nwhich intends his policies.<br \/>\nIn the moments before<br \/>\nthe Chair restores normality<br \/>\nwith &#8220;You should be in politics, Madam&#8221;,<br \/>\nthere is a functioning democracy,<br \/>\nand the Viewers at Home<br \/>\nblink, and partially rise from their sofas.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"right\">Alan Dewar<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Minister glosses a point from the Chair.
