It&#8217;s a common fear. But how, exactly, could this be happening? Let&#8217;s try and breakdown the possibilities:<\/p>\n<p><em>Because facebook somehow over-rides our free will?<\/em> Engineer and former Facebook VP of user growth, Chamath Palihapitiya, says this (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PMotykw0SIk&#038;feature=youtu.be&#038;t=21m21s\">video<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/,ww.theverge.com\/2017\/12\/11\/16761016\/former-facebook-exec-ripping-apart-society\">report<\/a>), as do others, but it is <a href=\"http:\/\/idiolect.org.uk\/notes\/?p=6214\">not a coherent accusation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Because facebook creates <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/how-to-check-if-youre-in-a-news-echo-chamber-and-what-to-do-about-it-69999\">echo-chambers<\/a>?<\/em>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/echo-chamber-what-echo-chamber-69293\">evidence<\/a> on this is ambiguous. One study found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2017\/05\/maybe-internet-isnt-tearing-us-apart\/\">people are more likely to connect with people with dissimilar views over facebook than offline<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Distraction<\/em>? Social media as a <a href=\"http:\/\/idiolect.org.uk\/notes\/?p=6221\">cathartic substitute<\/a> for political engagement? In <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bowling_Alone\">Bowling Alone<\/a>, Robert Putnam blames television and commuting for a large part of a loss of trust and participation in social organisations. Is Facebook displacing valuable social and political actions, rather than catalysing them? <\/p>\n<p>Related, does social media&#8217;s excellence at bite-sized information mean that context, nuance and argument are now disadvantaged in a way they weren&#8217;t before?<\/p>\n<p><em>Misinformation<\/em>? Fake news, propaganda, weaponised hoaxes, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.culturalcognition.net\/blog\/2017\/10\/11\/toward-a-taxonomy-of-fake-news-types.html\">whole boatload<\/a> of lies and half-truths. But surely <a href=\"http:\/\/idiolect.org.uk\/notes\/?p=1908\">this is not new<\/a>. Something about the lack of transparency, and the ability to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/senators-troll-facebook-fake-ad-2505359449.html\">insert misinformation<\/a> so it is transmitted along our social networks, the same kind of currency as news of their pets and holiday photos, adds a terrifying velocity to misinformation.<\/p>\n<p><em>False consensus<\/em> &#8211; creating the impression that something is universally viewed at true or important, when it isn&#8217;t. Distinguished from echo chambers, but algorithmically curated blindness to counterpoints. <\/p>\n<p><em>Erosion of common ground<\/em> &#8211; loss of common knowledge and frames of reference. If we don&#8217;t know why other people believe what they believe, how can we start to engage them<\/p>\n<p><em>Monopoly powers<\/em> &#8211; facebook has <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_virtual_communities_with_more_than_100_million_active_users\">2 billion+ monthly users<\/a>. That&#8217;s too much power for a single media entity to have without a truckload of regulatory oversight or democracy control.<\/p>\n<p>Any evidence bearing on the factors I list?
