This is the argument that free speech favors those with the biggest platform and most cultural capital. Is that one of the bigger arguments against free speech? That it\u2019s not free given power relationships?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NICO PERRINO: Yes. It\u2019s one of the bigger arguments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s also one of the most bogus arguments that\u2019s made against freedom of expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And here\u2019s why: In a democracy you have the vote that protects the majoritarian rule. The Bill of Rights, with its protections for freedom of expression, then defend against majorities exercising their political power to shut you up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Freedom of speech is always the tool for the powerless. If you don\u2019t have power, all you have is your voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So if you are pushing for censorship, you are tacitly acknowledging that you have power.
