Was just reading about Kurzweil’s ‘the Singularity is near’ before reading the link on ‘I am a strange loop’. (Positive review here, more critical one here.
Kurzweil gives a few milestone dates where the intelligence of machines will pass us by, then pass the entire species by. He’s very optimistic about all this, but it does at least hold out the hope of some other intelligence that might actually be able to explain to us what the bloody hell is going on with this consciousness thing – seeing as it’ll be able to do all sorts of fancy degenerative and regenerative things with itself.
The annoying thing is that we’ll all probably be dead before we find out. How vexing.
